Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering

Engineering multicellular complex tissues is important for regenerative medicine applications and in designing novel platforms for understanding cell-cell/cell-environment interactions, disease progress, drug screening and tissue/organ development.

An engineered myocardial tissue could be very useful as a cardiac patch and as a model for investigating the effect of external and microenvironmental factors causing cardiovascular diseases (CVD), drug screening for treating or preventing them, and with the advances in induced pluripotent stem cells, possibly for examining genetic effects leading to CVD.

Aim of this project is to engineer healthy and diseased vascular and myocardial tissue. Cellular interactions and cell behavior under healthy and pathological conditions is assessed using various physical and biological assays.
